I have spent more than three decades, representing people in personal injury and medical malpractice cases.
Over those years, I have learned that effective advocacy requires more than knowing the law. It requires understanding people, recognizing what really matters, and communicating complicated ideas in a way that others can understand.
That is what I have spent much of my life doing—in courtrooms, classrooms, churches, and through my writing.
Experience. Judgment. Preparation.
For more than 30 years, I have represented injured people and their families.
I have participated in over seventy-five trials between selecting the jury and trying the case.
Experience has taught me that the most important work often happens before the jury ever enters the courtroom: understanding the facts, the medicine, the witnesses, the defense—and ultimately determining how to make the case understandable to a jury.
Some cases should settle.
Others should be tried.
The important thing is knowing the difference—and being prepared for either.

THE TRIAL LAWYER AS TEACHER
Teaching has been part of my life for many years.
I have taught students at the high-school and college levels, taught adult Sunday school, preached regularly, and written about mindset and personal development.
Over time, I came to recognize how closely teaching and trial advocacy are connected.
A good teacher doesn’t simply demonstrate how much he knows.
He helps someone else understand.
I believe the same thing about trying cases.
Jurors may be asked to understand years of medical treatment, conflicting testimony, expert opinions, complicated facts and legal principles in a relatively short period of time.
My job is to take that complexity and make it understandable.
In many respects, a trial lawyer is a teacher.

The courtroom is only one place where I communicate.
Throughout my life, I have taught, preached and written about mindset, personal development and discovering the potential within ourselves.
Although these pursuits may appear different, I see a common thread running through all of them:
Learn. Analyze. Understand. Teach. Communicate.
Whether I am standing before a jury, teaching a class, preaching a sermon or writing a book, I am trying to communicate something meaningful in a way that another person can understand and use.
My daily mantra is:
“Be determined to nurture and protect your mind every minute.”
